In "the story of an hour" Mrs. Mallard had a sense of relief when hearing the killing in the rail road disaster. I found it to be odd, Why are you happy that your husband is dead? her reaction connects to her being a prisoner in her marriage and she is finally "free, free, free" as she whispered under breath. It was the only way of escaping a toxic relationship. The story also shows that she was keeping an image of happiness behind a smile (when the lie dictator states that was a lie, Maury humor) Noticing the hardship of marriage and being more aware on the significant other on how to achieve a better relationship to keep the marital bliss alive for years to come.
Hills Like White Elephants
The twos in this story are very significant, it symbolize the men thinking one way and the girl thinking the another way like: Two trains going the opposite direction with the setting being at the train station, how ironic. The two has different views on the abortion, the women sees a life with the three of them(happiness, joy, new chapter), while the man see's the complete opposite, the baby would get in the way of them doing the norm over and over again. (The moral wasteland) The control that the man has over her to convince her to get the abortion shows that she is powerless and doesn't have control in what she wants. Very demeaning, because what she sees is "white elephants" which indicates what she for see but he can't see it because of his selfishness.
